Titanium dioxide leaf

I heard the some Chinese scientists have invented a titanium based artificial leaf that is going to be used in producing energy by means of splitting water molecules in hydrogen and oxygen.
Apparently they try to mimic the natural photosynthesis process, and it seems that titanium atoms are critical for achieving such a crucial accomplishment.
