Grade difference

by Harry
(California)

What is the difference between Grade 23 titanium and Grade 5 titanium?

Grade 23 and grade 5 are variations of the same titanium alloy - TI6AL4V (titanium alloyed with 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium). The difference between grades comes from the different oxygen content in each of them (0.13% in grade 23, 0.20% in grade 5) which modify some of the basic alloy mechanical properties such as strength and toughness, making grade 23 more malleable and grade 5 more strong. It is highly unlikely that a titanium consumer product used in normal household circumstances will be put under such stress factors for these differences to become noticeable.
